Andre Adolphe Eugene Disderi: Le Pantheon de Paris c1854

How clever of the inventor of the carte de visite, Andre Disderi, to create a world-changing idea (the period from 1860-1870 was so consumed by the fad for carte de visite that it became known as the cardomania craze), and to promote his studio portrait business with what else but a carte? Disderi’s publicity carte was composed of 360 samples of his portraiture – the rich and famous clients who graced Disderi’s Paris studio – indeed a Pantheon of Paris. This must be the first photo-montage to be used in advertising?
