Julia Margaret Cameron was born 200 years ago today (June 11th), a week before the epic battle at Waterloo changed the face of European history. Julia changed the art of photographic portraiture in her lifetime. She was given a camera in 1863, and spent the last 16 years of her life reinventing portraiture for the artist-photographer, her contribution to modernist-photographic practice widely recognised by the Pictorialists and eulogised by Alfred Stieglitz, the Photo Secessionist in Camera Work No 41 (1913):
